At the plenary meeting A.Alizadeh’s son Nasim Alizadeh thanked the organizers, participants and shared the memories of his father.  At the end Arzu Javadova (BP) made a presentation on “South Caspian, Unique Basin –Unique Approach”.

The conference continued its work on 30th of April, 2011 at the Geophysics and Geology Department of SOCAR.  There were made presentation focused on the theme of the conference. The Organizing Committee accepted 27 of 40 papers submitted for the conference. Dr A. Narimanov’s presentation about the problems of the research works of Mesozoic oil in Azerbaijan took great interest and was widely discussed.  The geologists proposed to hold one day seminar on this topic that would be attended by the leading scientists and specialists. As it is known, the ultimate goal of ASPG is to improve technical development of students and young professionals. In respect of this matter ASPG carried out some activities such as:

ü  Excursion for ASOA and BSU students to The Reservoir Modeling Centre of Information Technology and Communication Department (SOCAR).  (March)

ü  Excursion to AZlab for ASOA and BSU students. Here, the students addressed many questions to professionals. They get acquainted and learned more about the modern laboratory and were updated about the leading-edge technologies that are being applied. We think this kind of excursions play an important role for students, in respect to get experienced and learn from the professionals.   (March)

ü  ASPG invited Alik Ismail-Zadeh, Senior Research Scientist at the Geophysical InstituteKarlsruhe Institute of Technology, GERMANYChief Scientist / Research Professor and Head of Section “Computational Geodynamics” at the International Institute of Earthquake Prediction Theory and Mathematical Geophysics, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, RUSSIA. He held a remarkable presentation titled “Modeling Sedimentary Basin Evolution” in Administrative building of Geophysics and Geology Department, SOCAR.  (March)

ü  ASPG student chapter was participated at 4th International Conference & Exhibition "Saint Petersburg2010" Student Coordinator of Azerbaijan Society of Petroleum Geologist Elshan Abdullayev took part at the conference with presentation "On the distribution of clay minerals in Productive Series of Western Portion of South Caspian (Example, Bulla – Daniz area)". During the meeting they discussed student chapter and cooperative work with European student chapter of EAGE in the future.

ü  On May, was held Student Forum. Students made presentations, debated current “hot topics” within the geology. This debate was a good opportunity for students to demonstrate and share the knowledge and skills they have learned.

ü  on May EAGE LC and ASPG organized excursion for students of Azerbaijan State Oil Academy (ASOA) and Baku State University (BSU) to Mud volcanoes and outcrops in the Perikishkul area (folding and source rocks). The students visited on shore volcanoes in the Perikishkul area, 41 km from Baku, distinctive for the presence of plenty of gryphon and hills. Representatives of "Azneft" PU Gahraman Suleimanov and Sabuhi Karimov acquainted them with the Paleocene-Eocene outcrops at South-Eastern foot of Karaislam (Islamdag), Perikushkul settlement and gave wide information about the age, genesis and system of mud volcanoes. It is on over-crumpled rocks of the Koun suite and is timed to fracturing complicating the Gultamin Fold. The main group of acting volcanoes and springs is located at a height of 321.6 m, covered by mud volcano breccia. Keyraki and Kechaldag, in the central part of Apsheron peninsula, erupted recently. Another geologically interesting feature of the trip is along the Sumgait river, where Paleocene to Oligocene strata are exposed including Maykop shale formation which is an important source rocks for the hydrocarbon system of the South Caspian Basin. The majority of the volcanoes and springs discharge gas, turbidity water, and mud with various intensity. The geotectonics context of this area is a large tectonic complex, i.e. Western Apsheron anticlinoria.

ü  The field trip to Altiagac for 25 students of BSU and ASOA. The trip was led by geologist of Geology Institute Eldar Huseynov. It was also attended by geologists of Azneft PU Racab Kazimov and Sabuhi Karimov. The students saw Cretaceous period sediments  (2 October)

ü  On October 30, Schlumberger Azerbaijan company held a filed trip for ASPG students to Gobustan mud volcanoes. The trip was led by Vugar Ismailov. Wide information were given to students about formation, age and genesis of volcanoes.

ü   On 6th of November, BP Azerbaijan company also organized a filed trip for students to Kermaky Valley. The trip was jointly led by Greg Riley and Shovgiya Mammadova /BP/. They showed the Kermaki field anticline and diapir area to students and then visited Kermaki and Fasila Suite outcrops and “Yanardag”.

In addition ASPG organized Field trips for specialists

ü  ASPG provided the excursion to Kirmaky Valey for TOTAL E & P specialists. The main purpose of this trip was to give information to TOTAL specialist about outcrops in the Absheron Peninsula, which will be very useful for exploration in the areas of interest for further drilling. SOCAR kindly provided us with the professionals who conducted this trip. (February)

ü  Another one was for RWE Dea Azerbaijan company specialists to Kirmaky Valley, a 30 minute drive north of Baku. It was also  attended by students. They visited the Balakhany oil field and saw the discovery well, the Kirmaky field anticline and diapir area and then visited Kirmaky and Fasila Suite outcrops. (May)
