About ASPG

American Association of petroleum geologists Azerbaijan branch is a voluntary non-profit professional geology organization united to facilitate the progress of geosciences, promote the advanced scientific information and to raise the professional level in this area.

Azerbaijan Society of Petroleum Geologists was established in March 6, 1993 and became an affiliate of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists as well as the first analog on the territory of the former USSR. In December 1996 Azerbaijan Society of Petroleum Geologists became an affiliate member of European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers.

Azerbaijan Society of Petroleum Geologists is a volunteer professional society of geologists united to promote progress in geoscience, to distribute and popularize up-to-date scientific information and improvement of professional skills. It has highly skilled in solving multidisciplinary problems related to exploration and production of oil and gas fields.

ASPG held 3 International Conferences and joint with AAPG International Scientific Symposium on “Hydrocarbon Systems in Rapidly Subsiding Basins”.  In 2002 and 2005 Joint European Association of Association of Geoscientists and Engineers, Azerbaijan Society of Petroleum Geologists and Azerbaijan National Geological Committee International Conferences on “Petroleum Geology and Hydrocarbon Potential of Caspian and Black Seas Region” were held.

Azerbaijan Geological Society holds Regional Conferences dedicated to the memory of Academician A. Ali-zadeh, outstanding scientist and geologist of Azerbaijan. The latter has mage a great contribution and develop petroleum geology, paleontology and geotectonic of Azerbaijan as well as mentioned sciences of the former USSR. Also ASPG holds Regional Conferences dedicated to the memory of Academician Sh. Mekhtiyev. In December 2010 ASPG is planning to hold mentioned conference joint with recently established Azerbaijan Chapter of EAGE.

Azerbaijan Society of Petroleum Geologists participates in American Association of Petroleum Geologists and European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers Annual International Exhibitions. ASPG exhibits exposures reflecting scientific Institutes, production enterprises related to geology as well as representation of foreign oil companies accredited in Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan Geological Society pays great attention to work with students involved in geoscience. ASPG “Geological School’s” whole activity covers three directions: activity of ASPG 3 Student Divisions; arrangement and holding of scientific seminars, short-term courses and presentations of foreign companies accredited in Azerbaijan; providing of field trips and researches.

“Junior Geologist’s” Student Division activities directed to increasing students interest in geological disciplines as well as their in active participation’s in Azerbaijan Society of Petroleum Geologists arrangements.

In 1999 with active assistance of the ExxonMobil Company was established the Chapter of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and Azerbaijan Geological Society in State Oil Academy, and later in 2001 and at the Baku State University.

Within the period of activity of mentioned Azerbaijan Society of Petroleum Geologists Division held seven Annual Student Regional Conferences with participation of leading specialists and scientists from Azerbaijan and foreign companies. Effecting these Conferences Azerbaijan Society of Petroleum Geologists select and provides sponsorship for the most capable students with their further training in well known Universities of Europe and USA. In 1996 EAGE and ASPG affirmed nominal scholarship for geological students. Every year Conference jury awards 4 students or masters evaluating and granting their interest in geology.

ASPG “Geological School” holds lectures, short-, long-term courses, presentation, excursions, and field trips for students, masters and post-graduated students. Courses for students have been organized concerning different geological subjects, English language, computer, essential ecology and economy.

Azerbaijan Society of Petroleum Geologists is issuing the “Azerbaijan Geologists” Scientific Bulletin that includes articles and scientific works in Azerbaijanian, English and Russian languages.

Within the period of activity Azerbaijan Society of Petroleum Geologists issued scientific works related to geology, geochemistry, oil and gas field’s exploration and production and first manual on sedimentology in Azerbaijan language. Books distributed among geological students and forwarded to Society and Universities Libraries.

In February 2002 Azerbaijan Society of Petroleum Geologists has signed the Contract about cooperation and joint activity with Azerbaijan Chapter of EAGE and Azerbaijan National Committee of Geophysicists (official representative of SEG in Azerbaijan).

Was established Association united Societies that work in different fields of Earth Science. The main goal of Association establishment was to combine Societies activity and their unification in future.

ASPG and Azerbaijan Chapter of EAGE held meeting on Problems of vocational training on geology, geophysics and oil-gas-fields exploitation on the 8th of September 2003. The given meeting has attended managers of foreign Petroleum and Service Companies, divisions of the State Oil Company, representatives of Universities. The discussion topics were: specific programs of preparation for Masters and young specialists per systematic and thematic seminars, workshops holding; training in well known Universities of Europe and USA; ecological education; specific scientific manuals publishing etc.

AAPG/ASPG International Hedberg Conference on Sandstone Deposition in Lacustrian Environments was held in Baku (May 18-21, 2004). Jointly with University of Utah (USA) ASPG held scientific seminar on Integrated migration pathway analysis to better understand the distribution of oil and gas in the South Caspian Basin (July 2004).

In the summer of the same year Azerbaijan Society of Petroleum Geologists is planning holding of meeting of representatives of EAGE LC and Geophysical Professional Organization. The primary goals of the given meeting are possibility to make presentations of each Society activity, have communication, interchange of information about forthcoming actions and an opportunity to find new contacts. It’s also possibility to discuss new joint projects: organization of joint conferences; seminars with invitation of specialists from different countries; arrangement of joint research works with participation of foreign scientists and specialists; students group interchanging and holding summer field works and trips for students and young specialists from other countries.

Take into consideration a great interest of Azerbaijanian and foreign specialists and scientists to EAGE/ASPG International Conference on Petroleum Geology and Hydrocarbon Potential of Caspian and Black Seas Region was considered to hold anolog conference in October 2008.

So interesting and fruitful ASPG activity became possible due to support of many sponsors and first of all of Petroleum Companies such as Agip Azerbaijan, AzLab JSC, BP, ChevronTexaco, ConocoPhillips, Devon, ExxonMobil, Halliburton, Kura Valley Operating Company, Landmark, Schlumberger, SOCAR, Statoil, TotalFinaElf, TPAO, Unocal Khazar, Wintershall.
